Russia - Russian heat wave and fires hit economy

The record-breaking heat wave in Russia has hurt the economy and the effects have spilled over to the rest of the world, with food prices soaring. In 2009 Russia was the world's third largest exporter of grain but around a quarter of the country's farm land damaged by fires in the first half of August, according to some estimates, expectations for this year's crop have plummeted to about 60m tonnes, down from last year's 97m tonnes.

Canada - Blight threatens tomatoes, potatoes

A wet summer is diminishing the potato and tomato harvest for area farmers and gardeners. Blight doesn't occur every year, but this year conditions are perfect for the fungal disease. Once the leaves of the tuber are destroyed by blight, the potatoes stop growing underground. Small potatoes don't store well, thus limiting the harvest.

India - Agri dept assessing crop damage by heavy rains

Amid reports of excessive rains in some parts of Nagpur, especially at Aheri in Gadchiroli district in Nagpur division where it rained 480mm on a day, the agriculture department has called for reports from all districts about incidents of crop damage because of heavy rains.

China - Warmer temperatures in China to reduce crop yields

With the climate set to get warmer from greenhouse gases, Chinese scientists predicted on Thursday that freshwater for agriculture will shrink further in China, reducing crop yields in the years ahead. They said the temperature in China had gone up by 1.2 degrees Celsius since 1960 and will increase by another 1 to 5 degrees Celsius by 2100.

Forage insurance a useful risk management tool

The sales closing dates for an insurance tool introduced a few years ago to help manage risk associated with drought or a lack of rainfall in pastures and rangeland has been moved up to September 30, 2010. Pasture Rangeland Forage (PRF) crop insurance is a group risk policy that covers livestock grazing and forage land, and in Texas, it is based on a Rainfall Index.

Africa - Bad climate to hurt farming

Developing countries have to be more innovative to weather the debilitating effects of climate change that are expected to severely compromise food security. Initiatives like index based weather insurance (IBWI) project in Kenya designed to reduce impact of weather related risks and farmers helpline Huduma Kwa Wakulima are important in helping growers deal with the new challenges.

France - Orchard acreage and production declining

The area on which fruit is grown in France has declined. Different important fruit varieties, such as the apple whose acreage declined by 3 percent in 2009, and when the average between 2005-2009 is taken into account there is a decline of 8 percent. Since 2000 the total acreage has declined by 24 percent, as shown in a publication by the ministry of Agriculture.

Pakistan floods lead to rise in demand for Indian veg

After a month of floods in Pakistan millions of people have been left homeless and thousands of square kilometres of land has been devastated. The southern regions of the countries are suffering from new floods. A dam which irrigated almost 200,000 acres of farmland in the north-west has also been destroyed.

New Zealand - Hailstones hit kiwifruit but no major damage reported

Kiwifruit growers in Bay of Plenty appear to have escaped major damage from hailstones up to 15 millimetres wide. MetService says a storm peppered the area around Tauranga with sizeable quantities of hail shortly after midday.

International Association of Agricultural Production Insurers offers a seminar on hail and storm damage on corn. The seminar is jointly organized by the association and Swiss Hail. the seminar will be conducted on September 8-10, 2010 in Egerkingen. Enrolment - by August 1, 2010.
