20.08.2010 India - YDDC bank receives Rs13 crore against crop ins compensation The Yavatmal District Central Co-operative Bank has received a sum of nearly Rs13 crore against the crop insurance compensation to be distributed to the affected farmers in the district. A sum of Rs12.93 crore was received from the Insurance company as the state government has paid the dues of the premium. The amount received on Wednesday is meant for the compensation for crops of cotton, tur, moong and udad. The compensation for the soyabean is pegged at Rs24 crore and that is yet to be received which is expected within 8-10 days.
20.08.2010 UN marks Pakistan floods as ‘biggest emergency on planet Earth’ The Pakistan floods were the biggest emergency on planet earth to this day. The worst case of floods which hit Pakistan with a force around two weeks back have killed almost 1600 people and affected lives of more than 15.4 million people. Almost one third of Pakistan is under water and a million houses have been directly affected. Livestock losses are colossal and so is crop damage. The infrastructure is completely ruined and the poultry losses are almost 100 percent.
20.08.2010 USA - Relief change shocks some farmers Many farmers will not be eligible for disaster relief allocated for 29 Washington counties. That's because they never signed up for crop insurance. Under the 2008 Farm Bill, farmers are required to purchase crop insurance or noninsured disaster assistance programs, or NAP, before a disaster occurs. Noninsured assistance programs cover crops that do not have coverage under regular crop insurance. It does not assist producers who have not purchased insurance.

Salmonella Brandenburg cases have surged, especially in the area between Waitahuna and Clydevale, and mortality at some farms has hit triple figures. 20.08.2010 Farm council to reboot as Viterra funds wind down The Farm Leadership Council, a Prairie farmers' organization supporting professional development for producers, plans a major reorganization and a move into cyberspace as its funding from its main sponsor comes to a close. The FLC, created in late 2005 as the Western Farm Leadership Co-operative by the grain handler then known as Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, will see its five-year funding arrangement with Viterra end this year. Viterra, formed in 2007 by the merger of SaskPool with Agricore United, has now pledged transitional funding for the FLC for the next two years
19.08.2010 Canada - Weather Network system to verify lightning strikes Insurance and fire investigators will now be able to use The Weather Network's data archive to authenticate lightning strikes as a possible cause of farm damages, power outages and forest fires. Oakville, Ont.-based Pelmorex Media, which operates The Weather Network and MeteoMedia, its French-language counterpart, on Wednesday launched an archive of lightning strike data as a new extension of its Pelmorex Lightning Detection Network (PLDN).

19.08.2010 Pakistan - Damage to cotton, livestock in floods More than one million domestic animals were taken away by devastating floods and millions of animals saved are suffering from starvation in flood-affected areas in the country. The floods will have adverse effect on textile and leather sector. Serious damage to agriculture crop which is estimated about one million acres of cotton crop, 0.30 million acres of sugarcane, 0.25 million acres of rice with other minor crops were destroyed by heavy floods in the areas which are rich in livestock.
19.08.2010 US- New citrus disease approaching Louisiana State agriculture experts are asking citrus growers to be on the lookout for sweet orange scab of citrus caused by a fungus and recently found on a satsuma tree in Orange, Texas, about 3.5 miles west of the Louisiana border. Previously, this disease had only been reported in South America. The scab presents little problem, but it affects the ability to sell the fruit because of the way it looks.
