The sum of 178 839, 60 UAH (approximately 35.000 USD) will paid for winter canola killed by weather risks last winter. 24.03.2008 The United Nations response to last year's drought in Moldova The United Nations system's response to last year's drought in Moldova was a 'powerful demonstration' of what can be achieved if people and agencies work together. In 2007, Moldova was struck by the most severe drought since 1946. Several regions in the country went without rain for four consecutive months. It would take at least three years with normal rainfall to restore the normal moisture levels in the soil. About 84 per cent of the total area of agricultural land had been affected and the cost of lost production was estimated at some $300 million. 15.03.2007 Russia - Insurance Company NASTA paid ot compensation to agricultural cooperative on winter crop insurance contract Insurance company NASTA paid out compensation to agricultural production cooperative «Krasnyi Rog» on the winter crop insurance contract. The partial crop loss (wheat and rye) occured after extreme low temperatures last winter (2006). The company paid out over 1,7 million RUR (65 thousand USD). 06.03.2007 "Moldasig" - Crop insurance program in 2006 (Moldova) In the spring of 2006, 51 crop insurance contracts, mostly for field crops, have been concluded. Hail prevailed among risks. About MDL 1.5 million of insurance contributions (ratio to USD 13:1) have been raised, provided for insurance liability of about MDL 34 million. This activity was approached even more actively in the autumn of 2006. 110 insurance agreements have been concluded. Agricultural producers mostly insured winter crops from winter frosts. On the whole, 6.2 million lei of insurance contributions were collected. Insurance liability was MDL 98 million.

The World Bank and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) co-organised a Conference on “Global Animal Health Initiative: the Way Forward” in collaboration with the FAO at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC (USA), October 9, 10 and 11 2007. 123 participants coming from international and regional organizations, representatives of governments of developing and developed countries from the five continents, and the private sector, stressed the importance and urgency of improving the governance and infrastructure worldwide in the field of veterinary zoonoses and animal diseases prevention and control mechanisms, as well as private-public partnership in the implementation of specific programs directed to animal health.
