Serbia - Drought-related losses on fruit and vegetable crops could reach $550 million

Serbia is experiencing a significant reduction in crop yields due to an ongoing drought, prompting earlier harvests, as reported by local media.

The drought has particularly affected the corn harvest, with experts forecasting a yield decrease of 16 to 20 percent.

Zarko Galetin, an agroeconomic analyst, compared this year's expected corn yield of 5 to 5.5 tons per hectare to last year's 7.2 tons.

Furthermore, Galetin estimated the drought's financial toll on fruit and vegetable crops to be around $550 million, considering market prices.

In response, the Serbian government is focusing on enhancing agricultural resilience through a $6.15 million investment in irrigation systems, as stated by Petar Samolovac, assistant secretary for Agriculture, Water Management, and Forestry in Vojvodina.

New Brunswick produced nearly two million litres (527,000 gallons) of maple syrup last year, compared to the year before when more than three million litres (811,000 gallons) were produced. While Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has a program that pays agricultural producers in advance to help them survive through the off-season, during a bad year, producers might struggle to reimburse the program. New insurance program will allow producers to cover costs during years like the one that just passed.
